Newsletter 7 September 2018

Dear Parents

Welcome back to a new school year. I hope you managed to enjoy the wonderful sunshine over the break!  The new pirate ship has docked in the adventure playground and the children have been very excited to set sail on it.  We have also had installed a beautiful wooden dragonfly seat/ balance beam, bought with the kind donation from the Safari Supper in memory of Kate Randall.  Kate was an ex-parent who was a huge advocate of the environment; she was the lead on redeveloping our Wild Garden and pond.  Thank you to Mr Nunneley (Mrs Voce’s Dad!) who very kindly installed it for us.

Thank you to Mr Ben Dix of Southcombe Garage for another year’s servicing & MOT of the minibus over the summer.

Staffing:

We welcome Miss Mayall as our maternity cover teacher in Reception.

John Owens has received a special award for the excellent job he is doing as our caretaker.  He has worked incredibly hard to make sure the school is sparkling for the new school year.  The hall floor looks like new!

Silver Jubilee Celebrations: Next week we are celebrating 25 years since the school opened on its new site.  There has been many changes in that time and we would like to celebrate with the whole community, present and past pupils, governors, parents and staff.  On Thursday 13 September 6-8pm in the hall there will be an exhibition of artefacts, memorabilia and photographs from the last 25 years, with wine and nibbles.  Please do come along to meet old friends and pass on the invitation to anyone who may be connected to the school in some way. Year 6 pupils will be acting as guides to show people around the school.

On Friday 14 September we will be having a Pirate Day where the children are invited to dress up for a suggested donation of £1, which will be put towards the cost of our wonderful new pirate ship.

Pirate Picnic: There will be a pirate picnic at lunchtime, so let’s hope the weather is good!

The kitchen will be preparing a picnic for the children instead of the usual lunch on Friday 14 September; they will be able to choose either Ham, Cheese or Tuna sandwich on the day, usual price of £2.20 for Nursery/Key Stage 2, or of course children can bring in their own packed lunch.

Friday will also be Circus Skills Day, with classes having a circus skills workshop by Splats Circus.

SEN : A reminder that if you wish to meet with our SENCo, Mrs McQuail, she is available on Thursdays and alternate Fridays. Her role is to co-ordinate Special Educational Needs and advise teachers on strategies and intervention programmes.

You can email her directly on: senco@hook-norton.oxon.sch.uk

Uniform:

Please could you ensure that uniform, especially sweatshirts and cardigans, are named.

A reminder that no jewellery is permitted apart from a watch and small stud earrings.

Footwear: our uniform policy states ‘Flat, sensible, safe shoes, in plain black, brown or navy’

PE:  A reminder that children should not wear any jewellery for PE activities (including swimming).  Stud earrings will need to be removed beforehand (teachers cannot remove them).  Please ensure that children have their PE kit at school at all times, with everything named!

Swimming: Swimming starts for Y5 on Tuesday 18 September – please see separate letter and remember swimming kits!

We have reviewed our values and will now be using our school motto ‘Live Love Care Think Learn Dare’ as the basis for our values.  Each term we will be exploring one of the words from a moral, ethical and spiritual point of view, all linking in with British and Christian values.  This half term we are exploring ‘Live’.

We have talked about the phrase ‘living for today’ in Collective Worship.

Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through him who strengthens me”.

Yours sincerely
