Friday 7th April As many of you may know we have embarked on our ERASMUS+ project this year in collaboration with our Swedish friends at Vastra-Parkskolan. This term has been particularly busy and we would like to tell you about some of the things we have been doing so far. The project Our project with Vastra-Parkskolan is called Cre8. Our main aim is to develop children’s basic skills in Numeracy and Literacy through the use of entrepreneurial subprojects, which classes will be doing in collaboration with their Swedish counterparts. Our Owl Values are fundamental to our project aims; children will have the opportunity to develop respect, tolerance and teamwork while working with their international friends. They will develop a sense of belonging and feel part of a wider community. Children will set ambitious aims and show determination in achieving their project goals. They will think about environment preservation, social justice and healthy lifestyles when developing their ideas. In November, Mrs Nixon, Mrs Belgrove and Mrs Hope met with the head teacher and International Links co-ordinator of Vastra Parkskolan to plan how the project will run over the next two years. Here are some of the things we have already achieved: Swedish Exchange visit A group of 12 Year 6 students have been lucky enough to visit our friends in Sweden. They had a wonderful time finding out more about life in Sweden, learning some of the Swedish language and attending school with the Swedish children. As part of the project, children visited the Science Museum developing their entrepreneurial skills. Among many other skills, children learnt how to solve problems make decisions, work collaboratively, build structures and ask and answer their own questions. The children also learn how to be more independent and pick up many important life skills while staying so far away from home. “The benefits of this co-operative project cannot be overestimated.” – Nellie Crouch. Kidzania The Year 6 children who were unable to go to Sweden this year had the opportunity to visit Kidzania in London. At Kidzania, children were given 50 Kidzos (Kidzania currency) and were sent off into the ‘city’ to ‘fend for themselves’. Children could use their money to pay for activities or work to make more money. Jobs included being a fire fighter, a police officer, a pilot and a fashion designer. The children could complete a university course to get paid more at each of the activities. Cookery Reception children have each had the opportunity to develop their skills in numeracy, literacy and communication and language by taking part in cookery activities. What’s next? Mrs Crouch and Mrs Peters have been the first teachers to take part in a planning meeting for their classes. They are in the process of planning projects with their Swedish counterparts surrounding chocolate, using the new portable oven and induction hob we have bought with some of the ERASMUS+ funding. The children will be completing research, designing products, creating packaging, advertising, analysing possible costs and profits and selling their products. They will then be sharing and comparing their project results with their Swedish friends. The ERASMUS+ funding has also enabled children from Vastra Parkskolan to come for a visit to Hook Norton to take part in this project. We are expecting 13 children to come over in May to stay with host families from Year 6. The children will take part in the project work and have the opportunity to go on a visit. They will be able to use what they have learnt on their visit to inform their project work. Children in Year 1, 2, 3 and 4 will continue writing to their corresponding classes in Vara to talk about their entrepreneurial ideas. They will have the opportunity to take part in their own subprojects over the next 18 months too but this is still in the planning stage! Thank you for taking an interest in our ERASMUS+ project.
