Newsletter 7 July 2017

Dear Parents School Activities this week: Y6: refining their water powered toys, sewing and painting seascapes. Y5: writing to their French pen pals at Ecole Louis Pasteur, Paris, using google translate to help them. Y4: curating a 3D shape museum and researching castle defences. Y3: learning about the Victorians in preparation for their visit to the Brewery and painting Christian symbols. Y2: making salads – the beetroot chopping was particularly exciting! Y1: sewing hearts and conducting a traffic survey (apparently 100 buses went past the school…) R: learning about the planets and space and programming the beebots (Spacebots!) to travel the solar system. N: some children had a day in the forest and new children visited. Congratulations to Evan and Morgan Wollerton who have been awarded the Cornbury Music Prize for their contribution to music in our school; they have sung in the choir for years and play the saxophone, recorder and flute. Congratulations also to Orla McArdle who represented the school in the CNPS Y5 Bake-Off.  She was awarded second place for her decorated cup -cakes and third place for their taste. The village library talked to all the children in assembly this morning about the summer reading challenge. We had Alternative Sports Day on Monday where all the children compete in a round robin of events to amass points for their team colour.  The weather was perfect and it was a fiercely fought competition.  The overall winner was Blue Team – well done!  Thank you to all the volunteers who helped it run like clockwork with Mrs Voce. Reminders: Yr6 IMPS Monday 10/7/17 - Children all need packed lunches to be eaten on return at 1pm and girls should wear trousers. Next week is the last week of clubs - Extra Yoga Session on Tuesday 18/7/17 Woodwind lessons with Mr Allen on Tuesday 11/7/17 from 10.25am instead of Thursday due to exams. Headlice have been reported in Y4 – please check your child’s hair. Y5 Truffle Sale: As part of our joint project with Sweden on developing literacy and numeracy through using our entrepreneurial skills, Year Five will be making truffles and selling them at the snack bar next Friday for Key Stage Two. They will cost 30p a packet. Any profits made will go towards books for the school. Rainbows Need You! The 2nd Hook Norton Rainbows are desperately looking for volunteers to run the unit from September otherwise it will have to finish running in July. Rainbows provides safe and fun extra -curricular activities for girls age 5-7. No experience is necessary just enthusiasm and a commitment to a couple of hours each week. If you are interested please mail hnrainbows@gmail.com Sports:  The CNPS Virtual Athletics results have been announced and I am delighted to say that we had lots of children placed in the three events. This is a competition between all the partnership schools where we put forward our top scores in Speed Bounce, Standing Long Jump and Tennis Ball Throw which are then ranked with the other schools. First place: Luca Risato Tennis Ball Throw Y4, Grace Mariner Tennis Ball throw (Partnership record holder!) and Speed Bounce Y3, Orla McArdle Marathon Mile Y5 girl. Second Place: Edward Mix Speed Bounce Y6, Sam Bayliss Tennis Ball Throw Y4, Lukas Wahlen Tennis Ball Throw Y5, Belle Floyd Standing Long Jump Y3. Third Place: Lukas Wahlen Speed Bounce Y5, Annabelle Butler Speed Bounce Y5, Luke Sampson Standing Long Jump Y6, Mya Scobbie Standing Long Jump Y3. FOHNS Family BBQ – today! 3.15-6.30pm (please note new times this year!): The Friends are working hard organising lots of activities –  the event starts off straight after school with lots of games – new for this year an exciting Golf game and Cream Teas - with BBQ food served from 4.30pm.  The licenced bar will be open throughout.
