Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas holiday.
School Expansion: I have met with the building contractors this week and the new building work will start w/c 25th January!
Work will be in two phases, beginning with a new Foundation Stage classroom next to Yellow Room. You will be able to use the usual pedestrian entrance and path for the time being. The area will be boarded off to ensure the safety of the children, however, please could you reinforce the message that building sites are not playgrounds.
I told the children in assembly this morning and they were very excited, especially about the crane! The builders will have a separate ‘compound’ with toilets, office and canteen by the kitchen with a drive way through for kitchen deliveries and emergency vehicles. Please can I remind you that there is no way round to KS2 past the kitchen- all pedestrians need to use the path around Foundation Stage. There will be additional vehicles and delivery vans so please take extra care. Deliveries will be scheduled outside dropping off and picking up times.
Phase one is expected to be finished for Easter. After Easter, Y2 and Y4 will move classrooms (to the old Y2 classroom and Red Room) and Foundation Stage will move into Yellow Room and their new classroom.
Phase two will then start with building two new classrooms next to the current Y4 and Y2 classrooms. Year 6 will remain in the Study Centre until the end of the school year. The two new classrooms should be ready for September 2016. Phew!
Holidays in term time: Please can I remind you that the school cannot authorise holidays in term time or any time off unless there are exceptional circumstances. For example: parents in the forces, weddings or funerals. Please don’t fill in a request form for absence unless you have exceptional reasons, as refusal may cause offence!
Free School Meals: please speak to the school office next week if you think you may be entitled to Free School Meals (even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and even if your children don’t want the meals!) In a couple of weeks our School Census records the pupils eligible for Free School Meals which generates additional income which we use to support children’s education, including helping with paying for school visits and additional support in classrooms. We can find out really quickly if parents are eligible so, if in doubt, please speak to us as a matter of urgency!
Aid for Refugees: There is a container of aid going to Lesbos from Hook Norton, organised by Vanessa Porter and Sammi Newman. If you would like to contribute to supporting refugees please bring donations of tinned beans, chick peas, tomatoes, tuna and soup to school on Friday 15 January for collection after school.
Emergency Procedures for School Closure:
In addition to informing BBC Radio Oxford – VHF/FM 95.2, HEART (Thames Valley) – VHF/FM 102.6/ 97.4/102.9/ 97.0/ 103.4 and Touch FM/Banbury Sound VHF/FM 107.6 who will make announcements on our behalf, we will send an e-mail via Parentmail, and put up-to-date information on our website: www.hook-norton.oxon.sch.uk. Because it can take some time for radio stations to update their closure lists, please check your e-mails and the school website first.
Unless there is an announcement on the local radio stations or the school website, or you receive a Parentmail e-mail, we will be open and children in the village are expected to attend. We close only if we do not have enough staff to ensure the safety of the children or if the school site is too dangerous to negotiate. If you come by car and road conditions are dangerous, please do not attempt the journey but contact the school to let us know; this will be treated as an authorised absence. In the event of the weather deteriorating during the school day, or loss of power, we may have to contact parents to collect children early – please ensure we have up-to-date contact numbers. If you need to contact school at times of school closure, the best way is via e-mail on email@example.com. Please do not telephone the school directly for information as we may not be able to man the phones.
Sainsbury’s School Games Award: I am delighted that our support for school sport and has continued to be been recognised; we have received our certificate for achieving the Bronze Mark for our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport in 2014-15.
Clubs: Everyone who has signed up has a place on their chosen club(s) – there are spaces for KS1 on Thursday’s Sports Club – please see the office if interested.
FOHNS: The Friends are holding an open meeting next Thursday, 14 January, 7.30pm in the school hall to discuss their May extravaganza ‘Hook Norton does Back to the Future’ – please come along, and don’t forget to bring your Flux Capacitors!
