Happy New Year! I hope you all had a lovely Christmas holiday.
The Bourne Lane development is due to start on Monday so please take extra care.
Holidays in term time: Please can I remind you that the school cannot authorise holidays in term time or any time off unless there are exceptional circumstances. For example: parents in the forces, weddings or funerals. Please don’t fill in a request form for absence unless you have exceptional reasons, as refusal may cause offence!
Complimentary School Meal for KS2 children: School meals are nutritious, healthy, prepared with fresh produce and meet all the government nutritional guidelines. Research has shown that there is a clear link between what children eat at lunchtime and their focus in the afternoons. A healthy school meal can improve a child’s health, behaviour, motivation and ability to learn and achieve. To encourage more children to try school meals we are offering Y3 and Y4 a free school meal on Monday 19th January and Y5 and Y6 on Tuesday 20th January. Please fill in the reply slip on the letter in your child’s book bag!
Universal Free School Meals: To encourage all eligible children to try school meals, we will be booking in every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 for a school meal next Thursday. The government ‘claws back’ money from schools who do not meet a high enough up- take of free school meals! If your child really doesn’t like the menu you can, of course bring in a packed lunch to supplement.
Free School Meals please speak to the school office on MONDAY if you think you may be entitled to Free School Meals (even if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2 and even if your children don’t want the meals! Next week our School Census records the pupils eligible for Free School Meals which generates additional income which we use to support children’s education, including helping with paying for school visits and additional support in classrooms. We can find out really quickly if parents are eligible so, if in doubt, please speak to us as a matter of urgency!

Emergency Procedures for School Closure:
In addition to informing BBC Radio Oxford – VHF/FM 95.2, HEART (Thames Valley) – VHF/FM 102.6/ 97.4/102.9/ 97.0/ 103.4 and Touch FM/Banbury Sound VHF/FM 107.6 who will make announcements on our behalf, we will send an e-mail via Parentmail, and put up-to-date information on our website: www.hook-norton.oxon.sch.uk. Because it can take some time for radio stations to update their closure lists, please check your e-mails and the school website first.
Unless there is an announcement on the local radio stations or the school website, or you receive a Parentmail e-mail, we will be open and children in the village are expected to attend. We close only if we do not have enough staff to ensure the safety of the children or if the school site is too dangerous to negotiate. If you come by car and road conditions are dangerous, please do not attempt the journey but contact the school to let us know; this will be treated as an authorised absence. In the event of the weather deteriorating during the school day, or loss of power, we may have to contact parents to collect children early – please ensure we have up-to-date contact numbers. If you need to contact school at times of school closure, the best way is via e-mail on firstname.lastname@example.org. Please do not telephone the school directly for information as we may not be able to man the phones.
Sainsbury’s School Games Award: I am delighted that our support for school sport and has been recognised; we have received our certificate for achieving the Bronze Mark for our commitment, engagement and delivery of competitive school sport in 2013-14.
PE Kits: All children need to have a PE kit in school at all times. If you do need to borrow a school kit, please ensure it is washed before return.
Important! Next Tuesday, those Year 5 children who are not going to Young Voices will be going swimming (no charge) with Year 4. Please bring in kit!
Clubs: All new clubs start next week EXCEPT Drama Club (next Monday is last term’s group catch-up session), Science Club (we have managed to delay the start to Tuesday 20 January due to many out at Young Voices), and Gardening Club which starts after the February holiday.
